Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue 'FACE' Programme

'FIRE AWARENESS CHILD EDUCATION'

FireIn 1990 Lincolnshire Fire & Rescue became increasingly involved in furthering children's understanding of fire, highlighting the real dangers of playing with fire and making hoax calls. Children's fire play could, if not dealt with positively develop into fire setting causing malicious ignition of property, possible criminal damage and serious injury.

Lincolnshire Fire & Rescue have adopted a proven method of dealing specifically with children who have a fascination or problem with fire, on a one-to-one basis.

The child advisors within Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue are specifically trained to deal with children involved in fire play activities. During a discreet visit to the home, advice and education may be offered to the child and parent/guardian. The service is totally confidential and carried out only with parental/guardians consent.

The FACE programme is available to children in the 4 to 18 years age range, and aims to change their attitude towards fire from a negative one to a more positive one. This is achieved by the use of persuasive techniques, educational material, videos, projects and general discussions.

FACE is a free, confidential service offered to families and professional bodies.

There are a number of reasons children play with fire, other than curiosity. These include jealousy, revenge, learning disabilities, attention seeking, boredom, peer pressure, to name but a few.

For whatever reason children play with fire, the damage caused is the same. This is why, with the assistance of hospitals (Burns Units), teachers, industry and other agencies we support parents in extending their child's education.
